When Ljubljana Becomes a Stage:
A Summer Stay at ECONTE and Evenings at the Ljubljana Festival
Ljubljana is at its most beautiful in summer when we do not visit it only for its landmarks, but take time to embrace its rhythm. Mornings are for the market and a stroll along the Ljubljanica River, afternoons for a peaceful rest, and evenings for a concert, opera, ballet, or musical under the city lights.
A City We Listen to Differently in Summer
The 74th Ljubljana Festival takes place between 21 June and 8 September 2026. For almost three months, music, opera, ballet, theatre, film, and visual arts come together at various venues across Ljubljana. Križanke, Cankarjev dom, the Slovenian Philharmonic Hall, and other city stages are therefore not only performance venues, but also part of the capital’s unique summer atmosphere.
The best part of such a visit is simple: there is no need to plan your evening around a car. From our accommodation ECONTE at Emonska cesta 12 in Ljubljana, you can walk to Ljubljana’s Old Town and Križanke, stop for dinner or a drink before the performance, and after the event return without rushing to the peaceful comfort of ECONTE and rest for another day of experiences in Ljubljana.
Selected Highlights of the 74th Ljubljana Festival 2026
The programme of the 74th Ljubljana Festival is extensive and diverse, so we have selected several evenings that beautifully demonstrate its range. Some events sell out quickly, so it is advisable to check ticket availability before booking your stay.
- July | Martha Argerich, Charles Dutoit and the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra — Cankarjev dom. According to the organisers, this star-studded piano and symphonic evening is already sold out, clearly demonstrating the interest in this year’s festival.
- August | Four Accordions, Four Stories — Križevniška Church. A more intimate evening featuring four accordionists performing music ranging from Bach and Mozart to Piazzolla, Edith Piaf, and Slovenian folk songs.
- August | Astor Piazzolla: María de Buenos Aires — Križanke. A concert performance of this unusual tango opera combines tango nuevo, jazz, spoken word, and singing; it will be performed in Spanish with Slovenian and English subtitles.
- August | Rade Šerbedžija: Jesen stiže, dunjo moja — Križanke. An evening of music, poetry, and storytelling in Šerbedžija’s distinctive style.
- 25 August | Sergei Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet — Cankarjev dom. The great story of the lovers from Verona presented through contemporary ballet and one of the most recognisable scores of the 20th century.
- August | The Constellation and John Eliot Gardiner — Cankarjev dom. The first appearance of the influential British conductor with this ensemble before a Slovenian audience.
- August | Vlado Kreslin — Križanke. Mali Bogovi, Beltinška Banda, and Big Band Šentjur will add a richer orchestral sound to Kreslin’s songs.
- September | Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Teddy Abrams and Yuja Wang — Cankarjev dom. A programme combining American music, jazz influences, and the pianistic virtuosity of one of today’s most celebrated soloists.
- September | London Symphony Orchestra, Antonio Pappano and Bruce Liu — Cankarjev dom. One of Europe’s leading orchestras arrives with conductor Antonio Pappano and the winner of the 2021 Chopin Competition.
- September | Mamma Mia! — Križanke. A relaxed summer finale featuring ABBA hits and one of the most popular musicals.
- September | Baltic Sea Philharmonic Orchestra, Robert Treviño and Lana Trotovšek — Cankarjev dom. The festival’s closing concert brings together Rautavaara, Bruch’s Violin Concerto, and Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony.
ECONTE as a Base for a Cultural Getaway
If you are visiting Ljubljana for the festival, location is more important than a grand hotel lobby. ECONTE at Emonska cesta 12 in Ljubljana is a very popular choice for guests who wish to stay close to the historic centre and explore the city mainly on foot. Križanke and the Ljubljanica riverbanks are nearby, while other festival venues in Ljubljana’s city centre are easily accessible.
ECONTE 1 is suitable for a solo traveller or couple seeking greater independence, as it offers a kitchen, private entrance, and a small terrace. ECONTE 2 is a small room with a bathroom, suitable for shorter stays. Both accommodations are designed for a maximum of two guests and provide an excellent base for combining culture, gastronomy, and exploring Ljubljana and Slovenia as a whole.
A Suggestion for a Perfect Festival Day
Start your morning with a coffee and a walk towards the city centre. Visit the City Museum, the market, or Ljubljana Castle, then enjoy lunch by the river. During the hottest part of the day, return to ECONTE to rest and prepare for the evening. Before the performance, take a walk through the Old Town, and after the event, finish the evening along the riverbanks or with a peaceful walk back to your accommodation.
Such a visit is not merely accommodation and a ticket; it is a relaxing city break in the capital, where the city becomes the backdrop and the festival the reason to experience Ljubljana in a slower and more personal way.
